While the curtains have blackout lining, some light seepage crept under the pole reflecting onto the ceiling. During the winter months, when there is more darkness, only the Roman Blinds are used in this bedroom. Using only the Roman Blinds during the winter months also allows the heat circulate from the radiator under the window. When I undertook my curtain making course, I turned up with the new sewing machine (a Christmas gift) feeling very excited to be putting it to use. The course teacher promptly told us we wouldn’t be needing them as that wasn’t the proper way to make curtains - we were baffled. Barbara (our teacher) outlined that the correct way to make curtains was to hand sew them. We went on to learn the different hand stitches, then incorporated these into making the curtains. When sewing curtains by hand, the fabrics lay flat on the work table much of the time. The layers, that make up the curtain panels, are joined together using hand-sewn stitches. Each section is meticulously measured and stitched accordingly. While I may be hand-stitching many metres of fabric, my eyes and hands work their way across in small sections for precision. I hope you’re having a good week so far and I hope you haven’t been affected by the storms too severely. This lounge was originally painted in a magnolia colour and despite having 5 windows (including French doors) it was dark and gloomy. A neutral off white/linen colour was used on the walls to keep it bright and reflect light. Colour was used in the soft furnishings to elevate the space and warm the room. It’s not always necessary to have identical furnishing in a room. Here, Roman Blinds were used on 2 windows, while the other 3 windows were dressed with curtains. I am Rina, Owner and Maker at Anna Laurence Interiors. I thought it would be good to put my face out there and see the person behind the business. I was taught to sew at a very early age, having learned to sew using my Mum’s Singer treadle machine. My Italian Mum was an avid sewer, knitter and crocheter; so, in effect my very first teacher. As a teenager, I used to customise my clothing and in my twenties my love of interiors grew after buying my first home, discovering interiors magazines and an appreciation of the classic English home. When living in London 17 years ago, I decided to combine my love of interiors and sewing by undertaking a curtain making course; I have been honing my craft ever since. It was a course that I did for pleasure rather than business and I never really thought that my love for sewing and creating soft furnishings would result in a full-time vocation. My business is named after my two oldest children, Anna and Laurence. I feel it is a homage to them that my love for sewing has grown – when they were having their naps, or I would need some time out, I would often take to a sewing project and learn new techniques for creating soft furnishings. My lovely customer was having some issues with her existing very wide Roman Blind. Unfortunately, the Roman Blind wasn’t wide enough for the window, nor was it pulling up and down correctly due to the weight of it. A new interlined, blackout lined Roman Blind was made to include a smooth running, aluminium headrail. Pelmets make great statement pieces in bedrooms. As well framing a window making it a feature, they are absolutely perfect for blocking out light, that can seep over the top of poles and tracks. Here, I used a ticking stripe combined with a plain, deep neutral coloured fabric to create a contrasting edge that compliments the Roman Blinds. Even though the curtain heading can’t be seen, a lovely hand gathered pinch pleat was used, allowing the curtains to pull open beautifully.
